8-Ball
8-Ball is one of the classics, played with a cue ball and a standard rack of fifteen object balls. The objective is for a player to pocket either the solid-colored balls (1-7) or the striped balls (9-15), followed by legally pocketing the 8-ball in a marked pocket. The APA uses a unique handicapping system, “The Equalizer,” to ensure fair competition among players of different skill levels.
9-Ball
In APA 9-Ball, players compete by scoring points rather than winning games. Each ball from 1 to 8 is worth one point, and the 9-ball is worth two points. Players aim to reach a predetermined number of points based on their skill level, which ranges from 1 to 9. This format encourages strategic play and quick scoring.
Double Jeopardy
Double Jeopardy is a league format that allows players to participate on both an 8-Ball and a 9-Ball team simultaneously. Your 8-ball team will play on one table while your 9-ball team plays on an adjacent table. This setup enables players to enjoy both game formats in one evening without the additional expenses of multiple nights out. The team rosters for each format do not have to be identical.
Masters
The Masters format is designed for the most skilled players, offering a higher level of competition. Masters events are not handicapped and players play both 8-ball and 9-ball while racing to win 7 games. The Masters format is ideal for experienced players seeking a more challenging environment.
How to Choose the Right Format
Choosing a format is really up to you—it depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Some players prefer a more competitive setting, others want something more relaxed or social. There’s no wrong choice, and you’re always welcome to try different formats to see what suits you best.
