Divisions

The American Poolplayers Association (APA) offers a variety of division options to cater to different preferences and skill levels.

What is a Divison?

A division in the American Poolplayers Association (APA) is a group of teams that are set up for a particular day, time, and host location. These teams will rotate playing other teams in the division throughout the session.

8-Ball

8-Ball is played with a cue ball and a standard rack of fifteen object balls. The objective is for a player to pocket either the solid-colored balls (1-7) or the striped balls (9-15), followed by legally pocketing the 8-ball in a marked pocket. The APA uses a unique handicapping system, “The Equalizer,” to ensure fair competition among players of different skill levels.

In APA 9-Ball, players compete by scoring points (making balls) rather than winning games. Each ball from 1 to 8 is worth one point, and the 9-ball is worth two points. Players aim to reach a predetermined score based on their skill level, which ranges from 1 to 9. This format encourages strategic play and quick scoring.

Double Jeopardy divisions combine both 8-Ball and 9-Ball formats, allowing players to play both formats on the same night. This format doubles the chances for teams to win and advance to more tournaments, ensuring that everyone gets to shoot and participate each week. It’s ideal for players who enjoy variety and want to maximize their opportunities.

Destination leagues offer a unique experience by combining opportunities to advance to both the World Pool Championships and a Destination tournament, with the chance to win a team vacation. These leagues are ideal for individuals who enjoy traveling and coming together with others to play on the weekends.

The Ladies League is designed specifically for female players, providing a supportive and competitive environment. This division encourages women to participate in APA events, fostering camaraderie and skill development among female players. Teams are made up of 3-5 players and a team match includes 3 individual matches. Ladies league teams advance to a Ladies Vegas Qualifier for a chance to play in the Ladies Championship during the APA Poolplayer Championships.

Ladies Night Out is our local answer for women who would like to play with other women in the 9-ball format. It is scheduled twice a month on Friday nights. Teams come together from different host locations to form a travel division and advance to tournaments with other 9-ball teams.

The Masters division is tailored for the APA’s most skilled players, offering a higher level of competition. This format is ideal for experienced players seeking a more challenging environment and the opportunity to compete against the best.

What Division is right for me?

The right Division is the one that is offered on the day and time that works best for you! When you choose a division, it is best to know if you are more concerned about a specific host location or a specific day, and talk with the League Office about availability.  You’re never locked in—you can explore other Divisions as your interests grow.

What's the difference between an In-House vs a Travel division?

The American Poolplayers Association (APA) offers In-house and Travel divisions.

The In-house Division is a division comprising all teams from a single host location. All matches in an in-house division are played at that location and it is not necessary to travel to other places to play your matches.

On the other hand, the Travel Division offers a more varied experience, with teams competing at different host locations. It’s a great fit for players who enjoy exploring new places to play and don’t mind a bit of travel. Both divisions offer unique benefits, so the right choice depends on your personal preferences and how you like to enjoy the game.
